CANNABIS LINK TO EMPHYSEMA
A study of young adults that smoke cannabis has revealed a link in increased development of lung emphysema.
The study revealed that some of these young adult cannabis smokers may become lung transplant candidates in the future.
A group of regular cannabis smokers was compared with another group of non cannabis smokers which revealed the link of lung emphysema and also secondary spontaneous pneumothorax.
The median age of the cannabis smokers was only 24 years, with long term users and daily users most at risk.
The study revealed that the consequences of habitual cannabis smoking included increased prevalence of chronic cough, sputum production, wheeze, acute bronchitis and the risk of myocardial infarction.

The Drug Advisory Council of Australia Comments
Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in Australia and smoking is the most commonly used method of using.
This study confirms other studies that smoked cannabis has major health consequences for users.
That young adults aged in their mid twenties are showing major lung problems and may become candidates for future lung transplants should be of concern to health authorities.
Early Intervention programs that divert cannabis users into detoxification and rehabilitation to get them off drugs are the best long term approach for cannabis smokers.
Lets ditch harm minimization for what works.
More detoxification & rehabilitation that gets illicit drug users drug free.
Court ordered and supervised detoxification & rehabilitation.
Less illicit drug users, drug pushers and drug related crimes.
