The United Nations policy on illicit drugs
The key United Nations Drug policy organisation has outlined the policy initiatives that it supports in fighting illicit drugs.
With regard to illicit drug supply control-
- Eradication of opium cultivation and illicit drug production in under developed countries.
- Prosecution of major international drug traffickers.
- Prosecution of corrupt officials.
- International cooperation and coordination of policies.
With regard to illicit drug demand control-
- Promotion of abstinence.
- Preventative education.
- Rehabilitation of illicit drug users.
- Reintegration of rehabilitated drug users into society.
- Public awareness of the dangers of illicit drugs.

DRUG ADVISORY COUNCIL COMMENTS-
Australia should adopt similar policies to the United Nations in order to reduce the supply of illicit drugs and to also reduce the demand for illicit drugs.
Australia must not undermine the international efforts to undermine illicit drugs by allowing illicit drug demand to increase.
Illicit drug users should not be jailed but given detoxification then rehabilitation to get them drug free permanently.

More detoxification & rehabilitation that gets illicit drug users drug free.
Court ordered and supervised detoxification & rehabilitation.
Less illicit drug users, drug pushers and drug related crimes.
