Jockey drug test expansion

The Victorian racing industry drug code is to be reviewed so as to include the drug GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate).

This policy change follows the death of a top level jockey with a well publicized history of drug problems.

There will now be tests developed to specifically identify GHB.

DRUG ADVISORY COUNCIL COMMENTS-

GHB is a central nervous system depressant which can cause amnesia, drowsiness, hypnosis, deep coma, abrupt loss of consciousness, respiratory difficulties, coma and death.

An Australian survey of regular ecstasy users in 2008 reported that one in five had used GHB at some time.

The 2008 ecstasy users study reported that 62 per cent of respondents said that GHB is easy or very easy to obtain.

This new development indicates that the culture of drug use is based on Australia's high demand for illicit drugs.

Unless Australia adopts worlds best practice of diversion into rehabilitation for identified drug users then our high drug use will lead to more harm.

Whilst high profile Australians with identified drug addictions may highlight illicit drug use there are many more who are likewise addicted.

Illicit drug demand must be reduced by court ordered and supervised rehabilitation so as to not waste the talents of all young Australians.

THE DRUG ADVISORY COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA SUPPORTS-

More detoxification & rehabilitation that gets illicit drug users drug free.
Court ordered and supervised detoxification & rehabilitation.
Less illicit drug users, drug pushers and drug related crimes.
