Needle distribution programs under fire

Dr. Ian Oliver has questioned needle distribution programs -

  1. There is no evidence that they reduce the spread of infection.
  2. There has been a massive increase in hepatitis C since the introduction of UK needle distribution programs which will be the biggest single cause of demand for liver transplants.
  3. 90% of UK & US injecting drug users are hepatitis C infected.
  4. US federal funding for needle distribution has been blocked.
  5. Vancouver needle distribution programs are out of control & since their introduction have the highest overdose deaths.
  6. It is better to treat addicts than encourage addiction.
  7. Needle distribution undermines drug control programs.
  8. Needle distribution sends the wrong message to children.
  9. Needle distribution encourages addiction & illegal conduct.
  10. Needle distribution programs attract addicts to impoverished areas with negative consequences & criminal activity.
  11. Needle distribution creates many new shared needles.
