ABORIGINAL LEADER SLAMS HARM MINIMIZATION
Councillor Maria Heggie has told a Brisbane conference of capital city Lord Mayors in December 2001 that the harm minimization drug policy was a disaster.
Cr. Heggie is a local government councillor in Fairfield which covers Cabramatta claimed to have 50% of drug crime in NSW.
Fairfield has been devastated in the last 16 years by the policy of harm minimization for drugs.
Cr. Heggie backed the comments of aboriginal leader Noel Pearson in the Sir Charles Perkins memorial lecture at Sydney University in October 2001.
Noel Pearson backed drug rehabilitation by ABSTINANCE.
He supported a policy of complete intolerance to illicit drugs backed by law enforcement.
He called for an end to the permissive thinking for grog and drug policy for aboriginals as a drugged society would be irreversible.
Harm minimization had led to an endless flow of aboriginal injuries, neglected children and unnecessary sick people.
He said harm minimization as the main social response to the grog and drug epidemic would cause the final breakdown of the aboriginal social relationships and values.
