DRUG COURTS FOR ALL
Proposed legislation to introduce trial drug courts in Victoria falls well short of what will work.
Detoxification followed by comprehensive rehabilitation for ALL persons found in possession of illicit drugs is a proven drug policy overseas.
This 3 year trial at one magistrates court will not solve the drug problems in Victoria.
The trial will only target serious offenders.
There is no detoxification and rehabilitation for those guilty of sexual offences or actual bodily harm. All offenders should be rehabilitated from drug use.
Those seeking bail should be ordered into detoxification and rehabilitation given that 41% of offenders commit crimes under the influence of drugs.
Victoria Police should scrap the cautioning program in favour of detoxification and rehabilitation for all those in possession of illicit drugs.
These drug detoxification and rehabilitation programs should be court ordered and supervised.
