EFFECTIVE DRUG REHABILITATION

Sweden has recognized that it must focus its drug rehabilitation on getting illicit drug users drug free permanently.

Sweden’s clinics get more than 80% of users free of illicit drugs ( some programs have even higher success rates).

Australia must follow those countries that are effectively reducing the number of illicit drug users.

Rehabilitation programs that have kept a previous illicit drug user off drugs for five years are considered successful in Sweden.

Like Sweden, Australia must adopt the standard that effective drug rehabilitation keeps a former illicit drug user drug free for five years.

Australian rehabilitation programs should be audited to provide nationally consistent reporting on getting users drug free permanently.

These nationally audited results should be reported annually to all federal, state and territory parliaments.

Former illicit drug users should be supported with programs to maintain their drug free status.

Australia should set national targets for drug policy success similar to those set for other social policy areas such as road deaths.

Australia should set the target of no more than 3% of teenagers having used illicit drugs in the last twelve months.

Australia should set the target that rehabilitation programs should be at least 80% effective in getting illicit drug users drug free for five years.

The Drug Advisory Council of Australia supports-

More detoxification & rehabilitation that get illicit users drug free.

More truthful information about the harm of all illicit drugs.

Court ordered and supervised detoxification & rehabilitation programs.
